Medicare Part D Coverage

Did you know that Original Medicare (Part A and B) doesn’t cover the cost of your prescription drugs? Medicare Part D coverage—also known as Prescription Drug Plans—can help cover the cost of both generic and brand name medications and can potentially help you save money in the long run. Prescription Drug Plan coverage can be purchased as a standalone plan alongside Original Medicare or a Medicare Supplement Plan. Another option for obtaining prescription drug coverage, though, is with a Medicare Advantage Plan. At Health Plan Solution, we can help you consider all of your options for Medicare coverage.

How much does a Medicare Part D plan cost?

If you have a standalone Prescription Drug Plan, your premium is based on your income, marital status, and whether you file your taxes individually or jointly. The average Medicare Part D costs can vary from plan-to-plan, and while some Medicare drug plans don’t have a deductible, no Medicare Prescription Drug Plan can have a deductible greater than $445 in 2021. A Medicare Prescription Drug Plan is not required, but you could face a late enrollment penalty if you choose to enroll in a Part D plan at a later date. If you have not enrolled in or have proof of one of the following after your Initial Enrollment Period, you will likely have to pay a penalty for as long as you have a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan following your late enrollment:

  • A Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D)
  • A Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) or another Medicare health plan that offers Medicare prescription drug coverage
  • Creditable prescription drug coverage

The cost of the Medicare Part D late enrollment penalty depends on how long you went without a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or creditable prescription drug coverage.

When can I enroll in Medicare Part D?

You can enroll in Medicare Part D as soon as you are eligible for Medicare or the beginning of your Initial Enrollment Period (your Initial Enrollment Period is the seven months surrounding your 65th birthday; the three months prior, month of, and three months following). It can be beneficial to enroll in a Prescription Drug Plan as early as you can to avoid any potential late enrollment penalties and to ensure you have medication coverage when you need it. You can make changes to your prescription drug coverage during the Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 – December 7 every year.
